Heesung Catalysts Strengthens Global Collaboration in Ammonia and Hydrogen at Gastech 2026

Heesung Catalysts visited 「Gastech 2026」, held in Bangkok, Thailand, from September 14 to 17. CEO Hyun-sik Han and Business Division Head Dock-Ho (Derek) Choi attended the event, where they met with KBR and other global companies and project partners to exchange views on key developments in the energy industry, including ammonia and hydrogen.

Gastech is a major international exhibition and conference covering key technologies and issues across the global energy industry, including natural gas, LNG, hydrogen, and low-carbon solutions. At this year’s event, ammonia was among the key topics of discussion, with particular attention given to its potential as an energy carrier and its role in the hydrogen economy.

Ammonia Gains Attention as an Energy Carrier

Ammonia plays an essential role in global food production today through its use in fertilizer manufacturing. More recently, beyond its conventional industrial applications, ammonia has also been gaining attention for its potential as an energy carrier for the storage and transportation of hydrogen.

As the use of hydrogen continues to expand, efficient methods for its storage and transportation are becoming increasingly important. Ammonia is being considered as one potential means of transporting and storing hydrogen, driving growing interest in ammonia cracking technology, which converts ammonia back into hydrogen when needed.

Ammonia cracking is a process that decomposes ammonia to produce hydrogen and can play an important role in enabling ammonia to serve as an energy carrier and ultimately supply hydrogen for end use.

「SUSO」 Ammonia Cracking Project

Against this backdrop, collaboration among partners and progress on the SUSO Ammonia Cracking Project were also highlighted at Gastech 2026. KBR shared the progress made together with ISU Chemical and other project partners, noting that the ongoing collaboration and momentum surrounding the project demonstrate the growing role ammonia can play in supporting the hydrogen economy.

At Gastech, the company met with KBR and other project stakeholders to discuss the project’s progress as well as industry and technology developments in the ammonia and hydrogen sectors.
