Heesung Catalysts Wins Best Presentation Paper Award at the 2025 KSAE Spring Conference for EURO-7 Compliant HDD Catalyst System Technology

2025.06.24

Heesung Catalysts Co., Ltd. received the Best Presentation Paper Award at the 2025 Spring Conference of the Korean Society of Automotive Engineers (KSAE), held from May 21 to 24 at the Jeju International Convention Center. The award was given for the study titled “Development of HDD System and Catalysts for EURO-7 Compliance,” presented by Junhong Jeon, Principal Researcher, who led the study as the first author.

The research focused on developing next-generation aftertreatment systems to meet the tightened EURO-7 emissions regulations. The study received recognition for its innovative approach to simultaneously reducing NOx emissions under cold-start conditions and mitigating nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions, a potent greenhouse gas.

The research applied a hybrid catalyst technology that integrates Cu/Zeolite-based SCR catalysts with V-TiO₂-based catalysts in a close-coupled (cc) system, maximizing the advantages of both. Performance validation confirmed that the system meets durability and low-temperature activity requirements for heavy-duty diesel (HDD) engines. In addition, the technology demonstrated stable performance even under real-world conditions involving sulfur poisoning and hydrocarbon (HC) deposition, key challenges in commercial applications.

Strong Industry and Academic Interest in Catalyst Technology

The presentation drew strong interest from both academia and industry, particularly notable given the limited number of catalyst-focused presentations in the automotive aftertreatment field. The session attracted a full audience, and the Q&A segment continued so actively that the session chair had to conclude questions to proceed with the next presentation. This highlighted once again the high level of attention and expectations surrounding next-generation emission reduction technologies.

Dr. Junhong Jeon, Principal Researcher and award recipient, remarked:

“It was rewarding to see that the catalyst manufacturing and evaluation systems we have long developed internally are now recognized externally as industry-leading research infrastructure. I was also impressed that interest in DeNOx, N₂O, and NH₃ reduction technologies is expanding beyond the automotive industry into sectors such as shipbuilding and heavy industry.”

Expanding Catalyst Solutions for Practical Applications

The recognition at the KSAE Spring Conference demonstrates that Heesung Catalysts’ accumulated expertise in catalyst design, manufacturing, and evaluation remains at the forefront of the industry, even under future regulatory frameworks such as EURO-7. Moving forward, the company will continue to strengthen its technological competitiveness in response to increasingly stringent global environmental regulations and serve as a leading provider of catalyst solutions that support a sustainable industrial ecosystem.

About KSAE

The Korean Society of Automotive Engineers (KSAE), founded in 1978, is the largest professional academic society in Korea specializing in automotive technologies. Each year, approximately 2,000 experts from industry, academia, and research institutions participate in the society’s Spring and Fall Conferences, covering all fields of automotive technology including electric vehicles, hydrogen vehicles, internal combustion engines, and autonomous driving.

KSAE provides a forum for sharing directions and policy challenges of future automotive technologies through its conferences. The society plays a leading role in industrial development by fostering technical exchanges, standardization, talent development, and international cooperation with global OEMs, suppliers, research institutions, and universities.
